Don Callis Attacked And Injured By Fan At AAA Triplemania 31

A scary moment occurred in the wrestling world this weekend. At AAA Triplemania 31 on Saturday, El Hijo del Vikingo defeated Kenny Omega in the show's main event. At a media scum afterward, Omega was talking to journalists, when Don Callis and Konosuke Takeshita appeared, with Takeshita jumping Omega, thus furthering their feud from AEW.

That's when things went wrong.

The scripted angle called for security to pull them apart. At this point someone attacked Don Callis for real, grabbing him by the neck and pulling him to the ground. Bryan Alvarez of The Wrestling Observer reported that what happened was “absolutely not a work. Everything was an angle up to that point, but then a fan who was apparently upset about what Don had said to Kenny jumped Don from behind, ripped his suit, concussed his eardrum and busted open his mouth while he was trying to choke out Don from behind. Don was screaming profanities at the fan before he was pulled off, and was said to be livid afterwards.”

It was later revealed that this attack was not from a crazed fan who was attacking Callis because he couldn't decipher between kayfabe and real life. Instead, the attacker was a member of the security team who didn't know who Callis was. He hadn't been told the angle was going to happen and thought a real fight was breaking out, so he put Callis in a chokehold as a way to stop him from attacking Omega. PWInsider reported, "During the melee, when Callis was kicking at Omega, someone from the company's security team who wasn't clued into what was going on, grabbed Callis from behind and took him down."

Don Callis One Of The Most Over Heels In Wrestling

Outside of maybe only Dominik Mysterio in WWE, no wrestling heel gets quite the reaction as Don Callis in AEW. Every single time he gets on the mic, massive boos interrupt him. On AEW TV, he recently betrayed Kenny Omega and is now trying to get Chris Jericho to join him.

Thankfully Callis was not seriously hurt by the attack at Triplemania, but if there is a silver lining to be found, it shows how effective and realistic Don Callis is as a heel. Initial reports after the AAA show were that a fan had attacked Callis. While that was awful and crossed every line, it was also believable. Callis is such a hated heel, that with how serious some wrestling fans could be, it wasn't surprising that if anyone in wrestling was going to be attacked, it would be Don Callis.

Wrestling figures are good at working up a crowd. AEW's own MJF once had a fan try to jump him in the ring live on Dynamite after MJF had riled up the audience. Thankfully, however, this was just a case of miscommunication, and the attack was not meant out of malice but someone uninformed trying to do the right thing.
