Although Jason Herzog is one of the most reputable names in MMA after legendary MMA referees such as Big John McCarthy and Herb Dean, there are times he is also put into question by the community for his controversial decision of stopping the fights. Herzog has even received profound hate from one of UFC’s top athletes, Paulo Costa. Regardless, whether there are fans genuine for the fighters’ health or career or there are betters who lost money because of an unforeseen way of officiating a match, the referees are always prone to be at the centre of the hate culture.
Referee Herzog has officiated over 700 fights in his overall career. He was last seen doing his work in Week 4 of Dana White’s Contender Series 2022. Some of the fights he has refereed are the light-heavyweight bout between middleweights Marvin Vettori and Paulo Costa, the 5-second welterweight bout between Jorge Masvidal and Ben Askren, the first fight between Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo and many more.
“Not one early, not one late. Perfect. Every time,” says Jason Herzog
A Twitter user comes up with a poll which asks if they would rather choose an early stoppage or let the fighter eat a few more punches and then be stopped and then comments under his own tweet “Herzog is consistently the best. I think he is great at recognizing when a fighter is done and when a fighter can still possibly recover. That’s right, you’re the best my man @JasonHerzogMMA“
Seeing that, Herzog quoted the Twitter user and said “Early you rob them. Late you didn’t keep them safe when they needed you. You must be perfect. Not one early, not one late. Perfect. Every time. This is the weight of responsibility.”
What do you make of this response by referee Jason Herzog? After fighters, the referees are always doing the most crucial job in the fight industry. Lately, referees that were formerly doing their jobs impeccably such as Herb Dean have made questionable stoppages and contentious negligence of faults lately. Do you think referees should be made to retire once they aren’t good with their reflexes and judgements anymore? How do you rate referee Herzog’s work though?
