Who is Lachlan Murdoch’s mother, Anna Murdoch Mann?

Anna Maria dePeyster DSG (formerly known as Anna Torv, Murdoch, and Mann), born on June 30, 1944, is a distinguished Scottish-Australian journalist and novelist.

Anna Torv, born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1944, was the daughter of Jakob Tõrv (anglicized as Jacob Torv), an Estonian merchant seaman, and Sylvia Braida, a Scottish dry cleaner. Her parents initially ran a dry-cleaning business in Glasgow before emigrating to Australia. Following a venture into a picnic park outside Sydney that faced financial challenges, her mother departed from the family. Anna grew up in a Catholic household with two brothers and one sister. She attended Our Lady of Mercy College in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia.

Commencing her journalistic journey at 18, Anna Torv began her career at Sydney’s Daily Mirror. She also contributed her journalistic skills to the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Later, she held a position on the board of directors at News Corporation. In addition to her journalistic pursuits, she is an accomplished author with three published books. Her debut novel, “In Her Own Image,” delves into the tale of two sisters entangled in a romantic rivalry on a sheep station near the Murrumbidgee River.

Anna was wedded to Rupert Murdoch from 1967 to 1999, during which they had three children: Elisabeth Murdoch (born 1968), Lachlan Murdoch (born 1971), and James Murdoch (born 1972). Following their divorce in 1999, she reportedly received a settlement of $1.7 billion, including $110 million in cash. Anna subsequently remarried William Mann, a financier, six months later. They resided in The Hamptons in a residence formerly owned by philanthropist Yasmin Aga Khan. Notably, Anna was targeted by kidnappers and killers involved in the tragic case of Muriel McKay, the wife of Murdoch’s deputy, Alick McKay.

In 1998, she was honored as a Dame of the Order of St. Gregory the Great. After the passing of her husband William Mann in 2017, Anna entered into a second marriage with Ashton dePeyster in April 2019.
